The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh (AP), Chandrababu Naidu, will take charge of the Happiness Index (HI) department that he has set up in his state. Earlier, Naidu had made several references to Bhutan's gross happiness index and wanted the same for his state.

Naidu feels that no government is successful unless the society is happy. He has directed his ministers to track the influence of their achievements at the lowest strata of the society.

When Naidu was chief minister of united Andhra, he had developed a plan 'Vision 2020'. Now, after the break up, the government plans to implement plans for a happy, inclusive, responsible and globally competitive society.

As a start, the government has started ‘Happy Sundays’ in different cities and towns of the state. On Sundays, certain streets are cordoned off and cultural programmes are held.
