“DMK leader M. Karunanidhi is fine,” said Rajya Sabha MP and DMK leader Kanimozhi after rumours of his death began making rounds in the state on Tuesday afternoon. Kanimozhi appealed to the people of the state and the party men not to believe in such rumours.

“He is doing well and there is no reason to worry about his health,” she said. DMK leader M. Karunanidhi has been ailing since December last year and is under treatment. Later in the day, DMK General Secretary K. Anbazhagan reportedly called on Karunanidhi at the latter’s Gopalapuram residence to enquire about his health.

The 94-year-old leader was in December admitted to the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai for over a month owing to breathing difficulties due to throat and lung infection. It was on December 1, 2016, that he was rushed to the hospital for optimisation of nutrition and hydration.

In August this year, he was again taken to the hospital for a few hours for replacing the PEG tube. The nonagenarian underwent a tracheostomy in December. The hospital bulletin then said that a hole was made in the windpipe to remove the fluid congestions caused by a bacterial infection and administer oxygen.

Apparently Karunanidhi has not been seen in public for more than 10 months now after he developed a drug allergy on October 25, 2016.
