Telangana cops get jackets to keep them cool

The dog days of summer are practically over in Telangana, but there is a 'cool ripple' amongst the traffic cops. This 'multi-purpose jacket' can be dipped in water and worn and will help keep the traffic cops cool by 6 to 12 degrees in summer and keep them warm in winter. The jacket has been distributed to 200 traffic cops in Hyderabad, as part of a pilot project. Those doing night duty will have to wear a reflective vest on top.

Dr Vishwanath Ravinder, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Hyderabad, is instrumental in getting these jackets. He said, "The product is very simple to use: dip, squeeze, wear. The uniqueness of the product keeps the wearer dry even after the jacket is dipped in water.''

He said, "There are two layers of fabric with a patented material in between and even when dipped in water, it won't be heavy and will retain the moisture for three to five hours depending on the humidity of the given day."

Apparently, the jacket also maintains the normal body temperature on very hot days, checks heart rate elevation and even decreases dehydration, which in turn will decrease exertion for the cops on duty.

If the pilot project is a success, the traffic cops might buy 1200 more for those working in the traffic wing in Hyderabad. Cops in other districts will have to wait for some more time.

The product was brought to the traffic cops only a month ago with a price range between Rs. 1800 to Rs. 2000. Luckily for the cops, the first lot was sponsored by the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Hyderabad, as part of their CSR activity.

Telangana will be the first state to introduce such jackets for the convenience of traffic cops if the jackets are a success.
