An engineering graduate confessed to killing two women in a village in Bulandshahr district of Western UP on Thursday and burning their bodies after one of them turned down his marriage proposal. The killings had shocked the state.

Preliminary investigation by the district police revealed that these women were first strangled and then their bodies were burnt. The badly charred bodies of Shilu Singh(22) and her cousin Shivani Singh (22) were found in Bahapur village last Thursday.

Ankit, a resident of Dhakoli village, confessed to the killings on Saturday. Police officials said, when his marriage proposal was rebuffed by Shilu, he killed her using a motorcycle clutch wire; he also killed Shivani as she had witnessed the act.

He then used petrol to burn their bodies. Ankit was tracked to be near the crime scene after his mobile phone signals were traced.

The complaint filed by Gajendra Singh, father of Shilu, says that on Thursday morning, he had gone to Delhi to his eldest brother's house to present invitation cards for the marriage of his son Rahul. The

wedding was to be on February 18. Shivani was staying with the family.

According to Gajendra, both the women were at home when he left. While he was returning from Delhi, an acquaintance called him to say that he had seen smoke billowing out of the house.

Seeing smoke, villagers rushed to the house and doused the flames. When they entered the house, they came across the bodies. The victims were found with the clutch wire of a motorcycle around their necks and their tongues were sticking out.

Gajendra claimed around 3pm, two domestic helps had gone to the house and taken his tractor for field work; they had seen both the women alive.

The perpetrator(s) reportedly locked the doors from outside; a plastic bottle was also recovered from the spot of the crime.

According to SP (Rural) P.K Tiwari, on the scene of crime, the police have not got any signs of robbery.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked for a detailed report in the case.
