Underground garbage bins to keep Hyderabad clean

Innovation and out-of-the-box thinking will help any city to stay ahead of the pack. This is quite clear with the way the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is thinking. Though there are other cities using similar methods, apparently the one which will soon be used in Hyderabad is one step ahead of the rest of the pack.

We are talking garbage. Or rather keeping it covered. There will be no more heaps of garbage around when you go to office, or are cruising around, because if GHMC has got its calculations right, there will be underground bins in strategic locations around the city, which will hide the filth so to say.

More often than not, the garbage is overflowing from bins, probably with zillions of bacteria hovering around. Though there are 4,000 garbage bins, with the kind of filth you find in and around, the bins are never visible. Though 700 trucks ply everyday to remove the garbage, the eyesores and stink continue.

To avoid such overflowing disasters, the mayor of Hyderabad thought underground bins will take care of the problem. Technically advanced mechanism will come into place when the bin reaches its capacity of 1.5 tonnes, an operator sitting in an office room will get an alert and he in turn will direct the truck to empty the underground bin.

Each bin will cost the GHMC Rs. 5 lakhs and a special truck another Rs. 50 lakhs. The GHMC is already crying off its shoddy treatment of the city, citing financial constraints. And since it does not pay its contract labour on time, the city is continuously under attack of excess garbage.

The GHMC has requested corporates to come forward to sponsor the project and a few have donated money and another company is also said to have come forward to take up the project.
