M.K.R. Pillai, the owner of Sreevalsam Group against whom IT raids have been going on across the country, has been terminated from the service of 'Consultant' to the DGP by the Nagaland Government.
Sreevalsam Group owns hotels, shopping centres, textile and jewellery shops and gold finance establishments across Kerala and in Delhi and Kohima.
Talking to THE WEEK, Nagaland DGP L.L. Doungel said: “I issued an order today terminating his service as the Consultant.’’
When asked whether any disciplinary action would be initiated against Pillai, the DGP replied in negative. “We have not received any information regarding the raids. Neither the IT officials or the Kerala state police has contacted us,’’ said the DGP. He added that Pillai was, anyways, on contract.
Pillai joined the Nagaland police as a constable. Within three years, he was promoted to the Naik rank and within a year, he was promoted as havildar. By 1981, he had become a sub-inspector with the armed battalion. He was made the additional SP at police head quarters and was awarded presidential medal for meritorious service in 2005. Very often, ranks were created for him. Even after his retirement, he was re-appointed as the 'Consultant’ to the DGP and has been calling the shots in Nagaland.
There were many complaints against his promotions. The matter had also reached the chief minister. When asked about this, the DGP said: “Promotions will not happen unethically. Moreover, all those happened much before.’’
Raids were being carried out by IT on several establishments run by Pillai—both in Kerala and Nagaland—and it was estimated that his investments in the group could exceed Rs 3,000 crore. The raids were carried out on the basis of an allegation that central funds worth crores of rupees have been diverted to the Sreevalsam Group owned by Pillai.
