After a gap of three years, two members of CPI (M) were arrested on Saturday from Purulia. Police said they were members of the Ayodhya Squad of CPI (M).
The arrests came a week after a Trinamool Congress leader was gunned down in Bankura and landmines were recovered from Binpur road in West Midnapore of Junglemahal.
The arrested duo—Kalpana Ghoroi and Panchanan Mahato—were picked up from a secret hide out in Balarampore at the foothills of Ayodhya hills of Purulia. Police described Kalpana as a prominent member of the Ayodhya women squad, which was revived recently. Kalpana hails from Nandigram’s Sonachura and took active part in Nandigram land movement, sources said. After that she moved to Lalgarh and joined the Maoists. Panchanan, on the other hand, is resident of Purulia and has been missing from his home since 2005. Panchanan is also a prominent member of the CPI (M).
"Kalpana was involved in killing two Trinamool Congress leaders in 2011," said an officer of the Purulia district police.
Both of them had left Balarampore after operation green hunt and were hiding in Ghatshila in Jharkhand. They had returned to work for the revival of the squad in Purulia and Bankura. Two pistols were recovered from them.
The duo were produced before the Purulia district court, which remanded them to police custody for nine days.
