It may be a long time before the Indian film industry has something like Hollywood does, by way of museums, star walks, film memorablia and exciting displays. But, the countdown for the opening of Phase I of the first of its kind, National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) in Mumbai, has begun.

Work has begun on Phase II that promises to be better than the static artefacts at Phase I now housed at Gulshan Mahal in Mumbai.

The Museum Advisory Committee chairman and veteran film maker Shyam Benegal has appealed to people to part with their previous rare filmi artifacts. Benegal urged people in the film industry to donate vintage instruments, filmi memorabilia etc. to the museum that will chronicle the century-old journey of Indian cinema.

The committee which met in Mumbai on Wednesday discussed and approved the thematic display in the interactive Phase II, which will be curated by the National Council of Science Museums in Kolkota. This phase, comprising over 40 interactive galleries devoted to films across languages and genres, will be housed in modern buildings where technology and creativity  in cinema will be on show.

Benegal said, “A visit to the film museum should be an engrossing experience and we should have a number of interactive sections, where viewers can watch clips from classics, listen to rare recordings or learn about how cinema was  made in the bygone era".
