Kerala government and the police are not doing enough to prevent a section of Muslim youth from treading a radical path, says Swamy
In the wake of the arrests of six persons from Kannur, Kerala, with suspected Islamic State links, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has said that successive governments in Kerala have surrendered themselves to the minorities in the state.
“This is worse than minority appeasement. Muslims in Kerala should acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus. All people in India, irrespective of their religion, creed and caste, have the same DNA. Kerala, unfortunately, has a huge identity problem,” said Swamy to THE WEEK.
Swamy said that the government of the state and the police were not doing enough to prevent a section of Kerala’s Muslim youth from treading a radical path. “Such a situation to be prevalent is convenient for all,” said Swamy.
“The Communist and the Congress leaders in the state are to be blamed for the mess. For a Malayali, the national identity does not matter. He cares only for his Malayali identity. And here lies the basic problem,” said Swamy.
Swamy said that terror organisations like IS will look for sleeper cells in Muslim-majority areas in the country, and districts like Malappuram in Kerala suit their needs. “Also, I feel unemployment is a factor in Kerala and it is alienating Muslims from their motherland. It is our collective responsibility to make sure that Kerala does not become a safe haven for terrorists,” he said.
Swamy said that he was worried for the state BJP leaders and the Kerala High Court judges whom the terror groups had allegedly targeted.
The National Investigation Agency, with the help of Kerala Police, has chalked out a detailed strategy to counter the rising terror activities in the state.
