'Increasing interest among students for apprenticeship'

Testing times The government has earmarked an outlay of Rs 10,000 crore to provide apprenticeship training to 50 lakh apprentices by 2019-20

There has been a five fold increase in number of students taking up apprenticeship, said minister of skill development and entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Tuesday. The minister said that this is essentially the result of comprehensive reforms that have been done in the Apprenticeship Act (NAPS) where the government is incentivising the industry to encourage engaging with apprentices. Till date there have been 5.9 lakh apprentices who have been engaged under NAPS.

BJP-led NDA government has notified the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme that would offer financial incentives to employers.

The scheme also supports basic training, which is an essential component of apprenticeship training by sharing of basic training cost with basic training providers in respect of apprentices who come directly to apprenticeship without any formal trade training (fresher apprentices.

Eligible employers shall engage apprentices in a band of 2.5 per cent to 10 per cent of the total strength of the establishment. 

Apprenticeship training is considered to be one of the most efficient ways to develop skilled manpower for the country. It provides for an industry led, practice oriented, effective and efficient mode of formal training.

Further outlining the achievements of his ministry over three years, the minister said that, entire ITI ecosystem has been re energised and they are looking to modernise ITIs.

Next month we are going to notify new norms regarding building, equipment, training which all ITIs will have to confirm to,” Rudy said
