Left should shun violence

After the recent assembly polls in Kerala, five BJP workers were attacked during the victory celebrations of the Left Democratic Front candidate at Kaipamangalam, Thrissur. Pramod, 38, died and others are in critical condition. Some of the attackers were accused in the murder of Yuva Morcha leader Sathyesh in 2006. Across the state, hundreds of BJP workers and their homes were targeted in the post-poll violence.

Left-wing terrorism began in the 19th century and became pronounced during the Cold War. Modern left-wing terrorism bloomed during the popular rebellions in 1968. Notable groups in western Europe included the West German Red Army Faction, the Italian Red Brigades, the French Action Directe and the Belgian Communist Combatant Cells. Asian groups include the Japanese Red Army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, although it later adopted nationalist terrorism.

Joseph Stalin was as bad as Adolf Hitler and worse than Benito Mussolini, killing millions of Russians. In China, Mao Zedong's dictatorship resulted in millions being killed, numerous books being burnt and universities being closed.

The communist leadership in India was not bred underground or in the jungles. Many studied in Oxford and Cambridge, where they were indoctrinated by the British. Left-liberalism was the perfect tool to legitimise colonial rule, as it robbed Indians of any sense of pride in India's past.

Communist movement in India began in the 1920s, with the formation of the Communist Party of India. It was dominated by atheists posing as upper caste Hindus. And, they always looked to the west for everything.

So, when India was fighting for independence, the Communists were agents of foreign governments like Germany, Russia, Britain and, finally, even Pakistan. And, Communists provided philosophical and intellectual underpinning to all anti-national movements. They supported the partition in 1947. Post-Independence, they struck a deal with the Nizam and his Razakars to fight Hyderabad’s accession to India. They backed China in the 1962 war, supported China's nuclear tests in 1964 and opposed India's in 1998. They even called Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose “[Japanese general Hideki] Tojo's Dog”.

The Naxalbari movement, which led to the massacre of innocents, began when Communists were in power in West Bengal. On February 27, 2013, the Union minister of state for home told the Rajya Sabha that left-wing extremists had killed 7,881 people from 2001 to 2013.

It is estimated that left-wing extremists collect Rs 1,500 crore annually through extortion and levies. Apparently, they cultivate poppy, too.

I have felt that the Congress and the Left are two sides of the same coin. The CPI (Maoist) was founded on September 21, 2004, within four months of the formation of UPA 1. The Congress helped the communists infiltrate state machinery. An example is the extra-constitutional National Advisory Council formed by the UPA. The NAC pushed the communist agenda of the Congress.

As Pinarayi Vijayan has become chief minister of Kerala, my worry is that state-sponsored violence will be unleashed on political opponents. Former CPI(M) MP A.P. Abdullakutty alleged that Vijayan, who was CPI(M) state secretary, had asked party leaders to follow the "Bengal line" of killing political enemies without shedding blood. Abdullakutty said this happened at a meeting held at the party office in Kannur on March 5, 2008.

A recent RTI inquiry revealed that 56 people died in internecine violence in Kannur—the home of the CPI(M) in Kerala—from January 1997 to March 2008. Over a period of time, the BJP and RSS have lost around 150 activists in the state.

In 1997, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee told the West Bengal assembly that 28,000 political murders were committed in the state from 1977 and 1996. In the next ten years, 27,408 people died. So, a total of 55,408 people were killed when the Left was in power. In other words, once every five hours there was a political murder in West Bengal.

Is that what Chief Minister Vijayan wants?
