In what is being described as a first such initiative in the country, an energy audit and star rating of Delhi government buildings will be carried out by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and state Power Department.

Various Delhi government buildings such as the Delhi Secretariat, the Vidhan Sabha, Delhi Transport Corporation Headquarters, GTB Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, LNJP Hospital, Inter State Bus Terminals and the Delhi Jal Board office will be star rated for energy efficiency.

The Power Department and the BEE will carry out the baseline star rating of identified buildings. After that, an energy audit of buildings will be carried out. The departments concerned will implement the recommendation of energy auditors in a time bound manner. In order to gauge the achieved savings, a final star rating exercise will be carried out.

“There is a huge scope for saving power in air conditioning units, chillers and heating areas. We can achieve considerable saving by adopting thermal storage systems for heating and cooling,” Power Minister Satyender Jain said.

Jain has asked the Power Department and the BEE to lay special emphasis on looking for ways to save energy in hospital buildings. He also emphasised that savings can also be achieved through time of day based usage of electricity (different power tariff at different times of the day) and differential tariff.

“The exercise should result in large scale savings of mega watts scale,” said Girja Shankar, Assistant Energy Economist, BEE.
