No change of stance, says India on veto power at UNSC

The Indian government has clarified that there is no change of stance with regard to its position as a member of the G 4 nations on the United Nation's Security Council.

Recently, India's permanent representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin, was reported to have said that the G 4 nations were willing to suspend their veto rights temporarily if elected permanent members to the United Nations Security Council.  Japan, Germany and Brazil are the other members in the G4 group of nations.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said the G4 position had two main elements.  One, there should be an expansion in both the permanent and non permanent categories. Secondly, the new entrants in the permanent category could exercise a moratorium for 15 years on their right to veto, which is available to current members. Thirdly, there should be a review of the reforms after 15 years.

"The discussions underway consider various aspects of the veto. The Indian ambassador's statement merely stresses that the matter of veto need not be made into something to protract urgently needed reforms of the Security Council,'' Baglay clarified.
