Eman leaves for Abu Dhabi after further drama

Around 83 days after Eman Ahmed landed in Mumbai in a private cargo freighter plane, the world's former heaviest woman who weighed 500 kg, left Saifee hospital along with her sister Shaimaa, on May 4 for Burjeel hospital in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, the patient and sister duo left the privately run hospital on a bitter note, after Shaimaa had a highly publicised spat with Dr Muffazal Lakdawala after posting a viral video on social media calling him a liar.

While Eman was supposed to be discharged and leave for the international airport at 10.30 am, drama broke out in Saifee hospital after the team of doctors from Burjeel hospital refused to sign certain documents given to them by the Charni Road hospital. The matter was finally resolved at noon after state health minister Dr Deepak Sawant intervened by visiting the hospital.

Before being given a discharge, Eman underwent a psychological evaluation at 10.30am. In order to transport Eman, who currently weighs 170 kilos, to the airport, a 20-km long green corridor was arranged by the Mumbai police, which completely cleared the stretch leading to Andheri from Charni Road, according to a statement released by Saifee hospital. In order to comfortably transport Eman, a hydraulic stretcher was imported by doctors at Burjeel hospital from Italy.

In a statement released by Dr Lakdawala, he said, “We wish Eman every happiness and good health as always. As she leaves India, we would like to thank everyone who made this journey possible. And of course, the medical team and hospital administration who worked around the clock for their sheer dedication and care.”

For her journey, Eman boarded an Egypt Air cargo airbus 300 around 3pm. Dr Shamshir Vayalil, the founder and chairman of VPS Healthcare Group that runs Burjeel hospital said, "Eman will be accompanied by nine specialists from our hospital including intensivists, paramedics and therapists. The aircraft will be readied with all the equipment related to emergencies and ICU which will include a ventilator, medicines, oxygen cylinders and defibrillator.”

After being admitted to the hospital, Eman will continue to be fed with a high protein liquid diet with the help of a feeding tube. Other than this, Burjeel hospital doctors have decided against conducting another surgery and continuing with her physiotherapy to treat the partial paralysis and loss of speech caused by her stroke and to improve her overall physiology, he added. After Eman lost 324 kilos, her other co-morbidities, like diabetes, hypertension, gout, water retention and hypothyroidism are now under control, according to Saifee doctors.
