Industry body ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) urged the Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia to exempt the primary health and essential medicines, formal education services from GST.
In a representation submitted to the GST Council, ASSOCHAM urged that the tax on basic food items that are currently exempted or taxed at combined central and state rates of less than 10 percent, and all essential food items other than junk food, be exempted from GST or not taxed at a rate exceeding 12 %.
In order to meet the “aspirations of India", the industry body has mooted a highest rate of 18 %.
