There's nothing more soothing than the fragrance of piping hot 'cutting chai' (sold in the streets of Mumbai), South Indian spices and the freshness of jasmine. Now a fragrance maker, Bombay Perfumery, has sealed the nostalgic fragrances, along with other ingredients such as lemon grass and cardamom, in its bottles and have made a formal entry in Delhi by opening a store, Vayu-Design for Living, at Bikaner House.
The eight fragrances that have been introduced include flavours of ginger, tea, jasmine as well as mistful woods. They are named as Calicut, Madhurai Talkies, Les Cayes, Sulawesi, Chai Musk, Seven Islands, Moire and 1020, and each one is packed with scents of unique ingredients. While Calicut has been created using the aroma of black pepper, cardamom and some woods, Madhurai Talkies, a women's perfume, captures the scent of jasmine, rose and violet. Les Cayes, on the other hand, is woody and citrus. Sulawesi is a mix of green and amber fragrance, containing hints of custard apple, rose and coriander seeds. Their Chai Musk contains a whiff of tea and lemon grass, a rare combination in perfumes. Seven Islands blends together vanilla and cedar wood, while 1020 captures the essence of Indian ginger.
The brand's USP lies in the way it has experimented with progressive scents by adding an Indian twist to them. Manan Gandhi, founder, Bombay Perfumery, says, “We have launched eight perfumes, three for men and women each and two of them being unisex. We are one of the first contemporary fragrance houses in India that has used Indian ingredients and tried to put a modern spotlight on them and do progressive things with it.”
The brand has captured the scents and sealed it in a unique way in the bottles that are shaped in the form of a handi. The reason is to build a connect with Indian customers and yet give it a contemporary look. Available in a pack of 100 ml, the prices range between Rs 3,900 and Rs 4,100.
