MURDER PROBE

Six years after Bhanwari Devi murder, key accused arrested

Six years after the sensational murder of Bhanwari Devi, a nurse in Rajasthan, one of the key accused was arrested on Saturday.

indira Indira Bishnoi

Indira Bishnoi, who was wanted by CBI and has a reward of Rs 5 lakh on her head, was living as a fugitive hiding in an ashram on the banks of the Narmada river near Nemawar, 160 kilometres from Bhopal.

Indira was accused of abducting Bhanwari Devi and later killing her. She has been absconding since the matter became a national issue in October 2011.

Bhanwari, 36, was abducted on September 1, 2011 after she reportedly threatened to make public a porn-CD of then Irrigation Minister Mahipal Maderna, with whom she was said to be very close. Maderna was later sacked from the cabinet.

The issue had become a major setback to the then Congress government in Rajasthan led by Ashok Gehlot. Some 16 people, including minister Maderna and Indira’s bother Malkhan Singh were jailed in the case. Maderna was accused of sheltering Indira after making her kill Bhanwari.

According to additional SP of Dewas district Anil Patidar, Indira was living in guise of a pilgrim in the ashram. She was arrested by the ATS of Rajasthan police. Patidar said that Indira was not using mobile phone or even an ATM card to avoid chances of being caught.

The case was investigated by the CBI, who in its charge sheet filed before a Jodhpur court, has accused Indira as the abductor and murderer of Bhanwari.
