With the Bahujan Samaj Party deciding to contest all the seats in the Punjab assembly elections that are only a few months away, the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government in the state is doing everything possible to claim BR Ambedkar and his legacy in a bid to win dalit votes.
The celebrations planned through 2016-17 for the 125th birth anniversary of the Father of India's Constitution, which include the government plan to install "impressive statues" of Ambedkar in all the districts of the state, may be of much help to the parties. The government has allocated Rs 15 lakhs each to the all the districts for the purpose.
Besides, Rs 3.15 crore has also been sanctioned for construction of Ambedkar Bhawans and their operations.
The government intends to organise district-level social programmes to highlight the vision, qualities and achievements of Ambedkar in modernising India. Seminars will also be held as part of the celebrations.
