FLOOD RELIEF

Politics over Gujarat flood; BJP symbol on relief bags

gujarat-flood-relief-bjp1 BJP's symbol on flood relief bags have drawn sharp reaction from the opposition | Janak Patel

Politics over the flood relief work in Gujarat took an ugly turn on Sunday with both the BJP and the Congress engaging in a war of words after the lotus symbol and name of the ruling party were found inscribed on the relief bags being sent to the affected areas.

The new controversy comes even as the BJP is making all out efforts to propagate the rescue work the state government has been doing. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an aerial survey of the affected areas last week, the party had categorically mentioned how concerned the PM was and how he took out time by cancelling his other appointments to visit Gujarat.

BJP's symbol on flood relief bags have drawn sharp reaction from the opposition with state Congress spokesman Manish Doshi accusing the ruling party of indulging in cheap politics instead of taking adequate measures for the victims.

However, in the Congress office, state party president Bharatsinh Solanki was heard instructing party workers to have party banners properly when the relief material is sent to affected areas.

State BJP president Jitubhai Vaghani said there was nothing wrong in putting the BJP's symbol on the bags.

More than 120 people have lost their lives during heavy to very heavy rainfall and floods in the northern part of the state.
