'Lady Singham' unshaken by punishment transfer

After her punishment transfer from Bulandsher to eastern Uttar Pradesh district of Behriach for locking horns with the BJP leaders, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shrestha Thakur has been getting a lot support.

After the Yogi government decided to transfer her, Thakur wrote on her Facebook wall, “Don't worry my friends I am happy...I accept it as a reward for my good work…." The post was widely circulated and her action was hailed.

It may be recalled that Thakur, during a traffic check drive in Bulandsher district, Thakur caught a man who was riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. He was slapped with a fine of Rs 200. The person identified himself as a BJP leader and said his name was Pramod Kumar. Thakur's actions created a lot of ruckus and an altercation took place between the BJP leaders and her. The BJP city president Mukesh Bhardwaj exchanged heated arguments with the lady officer for slapping the fine.

When the lady cop threatened to book them for interfering in the government work, the BJP leaders became wild. A video of the heated argument between the lady cop and BJP leaders went viral.

Her transfer has drawn a lot of criticism and majority of people assailed it. Sandeep Mathur, a local businessman of Lucknow said, "Her transfer will send wrong signals among officers. The cop was right and was just doing her duty. The transfer is uncalled for." Deenath Chauhan, a local of Bulandsher said, "The transfer was done just to satisfy the ego of the leaders of the ruling party, which is a wrong move."

This is not for the first time that such incidents have happened. The state has witnessed such incidents in past, too, in which BJP legislators locked horns with police officers. In June 2012, the BJP MLA Shriram Sonker from Mau, allegedly slapped and abused a home guard in Lucknow for stopping his vehicle, which had entered a no entry zone.

In May 2017, Gorakhpur city MLA Radha Mohan Agrawal had misbehaved with an IPS officer Charu Nigam. In March, BJP MLA from Sayajpur constituency Madhavendra Pratap Singh threatened the Deputy Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar over phone. The audio clip went viral online.
