PUNJAB POLLS

Punish parties making false complaints before EC: Capt Amarinder

The five week wait for the Punjab Vidhan Sabha election results has clearly taken its toll on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The party, on Monday, met with the Election Commission (EC) in Chandigarh and alleged that government officials were trying to remove the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that were stored in a college building in Nabha.

The district administration clarified that the EVMs were those which were kept in reserve for the 2015 municipal elections.

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh, who is also the party's chief ministerial candidate, called it paranoia and said that the AAP was preparing ground to save their face when the results are declared.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the former chief minister said that "every Tom, Dick and Harry" in AAPare running to the EC with one frivolous complaint after another. Captain Amarinder Singh said that there should be rules for penalising political parties that drum up false and unsubstantiated complaints before the EC, just for "cheap gimmickry".
