Aarushi Talwar murder: A case that shook the nation

After spending four years in Ghaziabad’s Dasna jail, Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, parents of Aarushi Talwar, welcomed the Allahabad High Court's verdict on their plea challenging the CBI court order convicting them for the double murder of their daughter and domestic help Hemraj. The court held them not guilty in the double murder case. Here's a timeline of the case so far:

2008

May 16: Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar found their 14-year-old daughter, Aarushi, dead with her throat slit in the bedroom of her flat in Jalvayu Vihar in Noida. Family’s live-in domestic help Hemraj could not be found and thus, becomes the prime suspect in the case.

May 17: Hemraj's partially-decomposed body is found in a pool of blood on the terrace of the flat.

May 18: Preliminary investigation by Noida police suggest the murders were done with surgical precision.

May 19: Talwars' former domestic help Vishnu Sharma is named suspect.

May 21: Delhi police joins the investigation.

May 22: Police probe honour killing angle. Parents Rajesh and Nupur are suspected of the double murder.

May 23: Rajesh Talwar is arrested for double murders.

June 1: Noida police hands over the case to Central Bureau of Investigation.

June 13: Investigating team arrests Krishna, another domestic help of Talwars.

June 20: Rajesh Talwar undergoes lie detection test.

June 25: Nupur Talwar takes second lie detection test after the first test was found inconclusive.

June 26: CBI declares it to be a “blind case”. Ghaziabad magistrate rejects Rajesh Talwar's bail appeal.

July 12: Rajesh Talwar gets bail.

2009

February 15-20: Rajesh Talwar undergoes narcoanalysis tests 

December 29: CBI team files a closure report citing 'insufficient evidence.'  Servants are given a clean chit, Talwars remain prime suspects.

2011

January 25: One Utsav Sharma attacks Rajesh Talwar on the premises of the Special CBI court in Ghaziabad. Rajesh suffers grievous injuries.

February 9: Trial court rejects CBI's closure report. Summons dentist couple, Rajesh and Nupur, to face charges of murders.

February 21: Talwars approach Allahabad High Court to quash trial court summons.

March 18: Allahabad HC dismisses the plea and orders initiation of proceedings against them.

March 19: Talwars approach the Supreme Court.

2012

January 6: The apex court dismisses Talwars' plea and allows the trial against them.

January 9: Supreme Court allows the bail granted to Rajesh Talwar by the Ghaziabad Magistrate would continue and asks him to appear before the magistrate on February 4 to face trial along with his wife.

2013

April: The CBI told the court that Rajesh and Nupur murdered Aarushi and Hemraj.

November 25: Talwars are convicted by special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Ghaziabad and are sent to Dasna jail.

November 26: Quantum of punishment delivered and Talwars were sentenced to life in prison by CBI court.

2017

October 12: Allahabad HC acquitted the dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar and held them not guilty in the double murder case.
