Despite SC order, Mamata to continue her tirade against Aadhaar

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would not leave the war path even after Supreme Court’s rebuttal.

On Monday, the apex court asked her not to use the chair of chief minister to oppose the central law approved by the parliament. The top court was hearing her complaint against Aadhaar linkage with all benefits.

But she has asked her party loyalist, Mahua Moitro, a Trinamool Congress MLA and a former New York based JP Morgan banker to lodge a complaint against the central law.

Moitro said, “Supreme Court definitely would find the law ridiculous.”

Mamata had said earlier that she would not link her mobile number with Aadhaar card and asked her partymen to do the same. But the sudden rebuttal by the Supreme Court put her in trouble and she said that she would abide by the order of the apex court.

Sources said though she publicly did not challenge the Supreme Court order, she has asked her party leaders to take up the mater of Aadhaar to a logical conclusion. She also asked her party MPs to create ruckus inside the parliament when the session begins.

A senior MP of her party said, “We would ask the government to clarify under which law its encroaching on the privacy of the people is.”

Party leaders denied that the Supreme Court order was a rap for the Mamata or West Bengal government.

Partha Chatterjee, secretary general of the party said, “Supreme Court never said the protest is not justified. It only asked us to come to court personally. We are going to do that.”

Aadhaar battle is expected to rock the parliament in the winter session. Mamata has also asked her party leaders to reach out to other political parties including Congress.

Trinamool Congress, sources said, had already a round of talk with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi regarding the plan of action on Aadhaar. Congress, though a strong proponent of Aadhaar card once, is likely to tow the line of Trinamool Congress.

“We are not against of Aadhaar card. But the way it’s being misused by the Union government is beyond comprehension,” said Pradip Bhattacharya, MP and senior Congress leader of West Bengal.

Sources inside the Trinamool Congress said that Mamata has taken the court order as an insult and she would now strike back.
