"The roadshow in Varanasi violated the model code of conduct as he conducted the campaign for about seven kilometres without necessary permission"

The Congress, on Saturday, complained to the Election Commission (EC) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's roadshow in Varanasi violated the model code of conduct as he conducted the campaign for about seven kilometres without necessary permission from the authorities.

“It is brought to your kind notice that as per information received, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted road show at Varanasi from BHU (Banaras Hindu University) for about seven kilometres without necessary permission from the competent authority,” the Congress said in its petition to the EC.

K.C.Mittal, secretary in charge of the legal and human rights department of the AICC, who submitted the petition, has demanded an FIR to be registered against all the BJP leaders, including Modi, who were part of the roadshow.

The roadshow covered three Assembly constituencies in Varanasi—Banaras Dakshin, Banaras Cant and Banaras Uttar. During the roadshow, Modi also went to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Kal Bhairav Temple.

“The BJP has misused constitutional rights. The roadshow was conducted in flagrant violation of the model code of conduct,” said Samajwadi Party leader Rajendra Chaudhary.
