Assets of Uttarakhand MLAs almost doubled in five years

The assets of MLAs, who are contesting again this time in the Assembly polls in Uttarakhand, have almost doubled in the last five years, reveals an analysis of the affidavits submitted by the candidates before the Election Commission.

The Association for Democratic Reforms says in its report that the average assets of 60 sitting MLAs from various parties, who are contesting again this time, rose to Rs 3.62 crore from Rs 1.85 crore in 2012.

The assets of these MLAs have increased by Rs 1.77 crore while the average percentage increase is 96 per cent.

The highest increase in assets was registered by Jaspur MLA Shailendra Mohan Singhal, who recently switched over from the Congress to the BJP. His assets jumped from Rs 3 crore to Rs 35 crore with an increase of 1015 per cent.

Nav Prabhat, a sitting Congress MLA from Vikasnagar in Dehradun, had assets worth Rs 3 crore in 2012. By 2017, it has grown to Rs 9 crore with an increase of 170 per cent.

Assets of MLA Rekha Arya, who has also moved from the Congress to the BJP, increased by 90 per cent from Rs 6 crore in 2012 to Rs 12 crore in 2017.

A party-wise analysis shows that the independent MLAs registered maximum growth in assets with an average increase of 210 per cent. Assets of BSP MLAs increased by 175 per cent while Congress and BJP MLAs registered 105 per cent and 85 per cent growth respectively in their assets.
