Noted dancer and Padma Bhushan awardee Mrinalini Sarabhai passed away at her residence in Ahmedabad on Thursday morning. She was 97.

Mrinalini, wife of scientist late Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, is survived by their children environmentalist Dr. Kartikeya Sarabhai and dancer and social activist Mallika Sarabhai.

Mallika confirmed the news on her Facebook page saying, “My mother Mrinalini Sarabhai has just left for her eternal dance.”

Mrinalini was admitted to a private hospital on Wednesday morning following age-related complications. She was in the ICU, but was shifted to her residence on Thursday.

Fondly called “amma”, Mrinalini, who was educated under the guidance of Rabindranath Tagore, founded Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.

Despite old age, she used to attend important programmes in the city and watch key performances at Darpana until recently.

According to sources, the last rites are expected to be held at Pethapur, about 35 kilometers away from Ahmedabad near Gandhinagar, on Thursday evening.
