In a shocking goof-up at the Oscars, presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty incorrectly declared La La Land the winner of the award for Best Picture, instead of Moonlight.
La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz was already half way into his acceptance speech when the truth slowly spread through the group of people on the podium. When Horowitz stopped his speech, held out his Oscar award and said: “There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke,” it sent shock waves across the room, and onto thousands of people glued on to their televisions.
Many took to social media to express sentiments and the overwhelming joy at Moonlight's well-deserved win. Barry Jenkins' Moonlight is a stunning coming-of-age story of a gay black man.
Queer black men were celebrated on the stage tonight. May the goodness of Moonlight carry you throughout the week. #Oscars

Though the joke was initially on presenters Dunaway and Beatty, it was later revealed that it was a crew member's responsibility to ensure that the right envelope gets to the stage. Beatty was handed over the wrong envelope which revealed Emma Stone had won award for best actress for La La Land.

The blunder brought back memories of the infamous Miss Universe 2015 screw-up in which comedian Steve Harvey declared Miss Columbia as the winner of the pageant, only to correct himself moments later and declare Miss Philippines as the winner.
And now with the Oscar blunder, the folks at Miss Universe got a chance to get back on their feet. Their tweet has already been re-tweeted over 15,000 times and has earned 20,000 likes.
Have your people call our people - we know what to do. #Oscars #MissUniverse

Many joked that maybe something similar went wrong about the US presidential election results, too. Maybe Hillary Clinton did win.
Wow. They pulled a Steve Harvey at the oscars. America now waits for election night correction 😏🤔 #Oscars2017 #moonlight #bestpicture pic.twitter.com/1q8Hgvcu2A
