In a freakish incident reported in Jersey, Papua New Guinea's Kipling Doriga has been charged with robbery. The 20-year-old has been named in an incident that occured on Monday (August 25) at Jersey's capital city of St Heliers. Currently, the Papua New Guinea cricket team is in Jersey as part of the ICC's CWC Challenge that features hosts Jersey along side Denmark, Kenya, Qatar and Kuwait. Doriga was promptly taken in by the local police and presented before the Magistrate's court on Wednesday. Reacting to the allegations, Doriga has pled guilty and following this, the case has been transferred from the Magistrate's Court to the next level, which is the Royal Court.

This was done because the Magistrate felt that the case was a lot more serious and needed a higher authority to make the final judgement. The next hearing for the case has been allotted for November 28 and the bad news for Kipling is that he has been denied bail. It means that he will be remanded in custody till the next hearing is complete. EMTV, one of the leading media in Papua New Guinea revealed that the development was confirmed by the country's cricket board but have chosen not to comment further on the incident.
Jersey are scheduled to play Papua New Guinea on Friday (August 29) as part of this tournament. The hosts are sitting pretty at the top of the table with six wins and just a solitary defeat from their seven games so far. Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea have had a mixed run, with four wins and three losses in their campaign till date.
Doriga has represented Papua New Guinea in 97 T20Is and was part of their T20 World Cup squads in 2021 and 2024. Across these two tournaments, he featured in seven international games. After the ongoing tournament, Papua New Guinea have the all-important 2025 men's T20 World Cup Asia-RAP Regional final, in which they will aim for a top-three finish that shall book them a berth for the T20 World Cup next year.
