A teacher from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was shot dead on the campus in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh last night by unidentified assailants.
The victim was identified as Rao Danish Ali, who taught at the university's ABK High School. Officials said that he was attacked near the Maulana Azad Library at around 9pm when he was out for a walk with two colleagues. The two attackers came on a two-wheeler, threatened them with pistols and shot Ali thrice, twice in the head.
AMU Proctor Mohd. Wasim Ali said that the university was alerted to a shooting near the library, and the injured man was immediately taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. "We received a report that a man was shot near the library and had been rushed to the medical college," he said. "He was later identified as Rao Danish Ali, a teacher at our ABK School, who sadly passed away from his injuries at the hospital."
Police officers said that the reason for this attack is still unknown.
Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed the involvement of two unidentified men in the shooting. A full-scale investigation is underway, and police teams are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify and track down the culprits.
Ironically, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had recently claimed in the assembly that the law and order in the state had improved. “An atmosphere of security is essential for every person. Today, every person can say that investment is coming to UP because of the improved security environment,” he said.
Adityanath had also said that there have been no communal riots. “If anyone wants to know how rioters are dealt with, they should ask the maulana from Bareilly. There is neither a curfew nor any riot now. Everything is fine in Uttar Pradesh. This is the new UP.”
