The much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport officially opened for commercial flights on Thursday, thus paving the way for more travel options for people in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The new airport, also known as NMIA, kicked off its services with the arrival of an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru at 8am. It was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute, a special ceremony to celebrate the airport's first-ever commercial landing.
Shortly after the first arrival, the airport handled its first departure. At 8:40am, an IndiGo flight took off for Hyderabad, successfully marking the first full cycle of operations at the new facility.
Several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air, began flying from the airport on its first day, connecting Navi Mumbai to nine different cities across the country.

The airport will handle 15 departures on its opening day. It will operate for 12 hours, from 8am to 8pm, with the capacity for about 10 takeoffs and landings every hour. This will soon grow to 24 daily flights to 13 destinations.
The first phase of this massive project was developed with an investment of Rs 19,650 crore – it is being built in five phases. Once fully complete, it is expected to serve 90 million passengers annually and will feature dedicated cargo facilities and excellent transport links. The project is managed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a partnership where the Adani Group holds a 74 per cent share and CIDCO owns the remaining 26 per cent.
The airport plans to gradually increase its operations, aiming to be open 24/7 starting from February of next year.
