Central security agencies will hand over tapes of televangelist Zakir Naik's alleged inflammatory speeches to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad for further scrutiny before it firms up a case to ban his NGO and its activities in the country.
The solicitor general, through the law ministry, had said that Naik was sharing different views in different speeches and a straight forward case to ban him or his organisation could be made only after further scrutiny, top sources said.
For now, the legal opinion has paved way for further analysis of tapes of speeches of Naik which would be handed over to the Maharashtra ATS.
Till now, only the central agencies like the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) were scrutinising his tapes. The NIA has been making out a strong case to book Naik under the anti-terror laws for delivering alleged hate speeches at different forums .
The tape analysis coupled with the report of the Maharashtra ATS will now form basis of further action against the preacher.
