A woman from Bengaluru moved the Supreme Court, claiming to be the daughter of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The 37-year-old woman, identified as Amrutha, said she is willing to undergo a DNA test to prove that her claim is legitimate, according to media reports.

An apex court bench, headed by Justice Madan B. Lokur, is expected to decide whether or not to admit the petition.

The woman claimed that her birth was kept a secret to ensure that the former chief minister does not suffer any sort of social stigma. She said she was born on August 14, 1980. Amrutha's two relatives are co-petitioners in the case. They have sought the Supreme Court's intervention to assist Amrutha to prove that she is the daughter of the former Tamil Nadu chief minister.

According to media reports, Amrutha sought exhumation of Jayalalithaa's body for the DNA test and cremation of the mortal remains in keeping with the Vaishnava Brahmin traditions.

She said she had met Jayalalithaa several times and that the latter was affectionate to her.

The woman has further claimed that although she had tried to establish the fact that Jayalalithaa is her mother, her attempts were thwarted by the supporters of jailed AIADMK leader Sasikala. She said she tried to meet Jayalalithaa when she was admitted to the Apollo Hospital last year, but was unable to do so as the supporters of Sasikala ensured that the meeting did not take place.

Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016, after her battle with a prolonged illness.
