500 kg Egyptian knocks off 120 kg, undergoes bariatric surgery

eman-ahmed Eman Ahmed

While Eman previously weighed 500 kg when she landed in the city, she currently weighs 378 kgs, which means to managed to knock off 120 kg in a span of one month itself. Carlyne Remedios, a nutritionist at the hospital says, “Eman is currently on a high protein liquid diet that is administered to her via a feeding tube. She receives 200 ml feeds every two hours starting at 6 am to 12 midnight.”

“The protein supplement is mixed in 200 ml unflavoured soymilk. In order to meet her calorie values, she also receives a total of 45 ml of MCT ( medium chain triglyceride ) oil along with the feeds,” adds Remedios. As of now, Eman’s total calorie intake is 1750 kcals per day. Back home, her diet mainly consisted of a few chicken sandwiches and custard.

After she successfully underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on March 7 in Saifee hospital, doctors are now working on treating her associated health problems which include diabetes, gout, hypertension, hypothyroidism, obstructive sleep apnea, and restrictive lung disease. After these issues are addressed, arrangements will be made to fly her back home to Alexandria, further stated the statement released by Saifee hospital.

During the sleeve gastrectomy, the size of her stomach was reduced by 15 per cent of its original size as a large portion of her stomach fat was removed. Eman had traveled to Mumbai in a cargo freighter and it cost Saifee hospital Rs 83 lakh to make special arrangements for her while taking into consideration her weight and the fact that she has been bedridden for the last 25 years.

After Eman’s weight drops to 200 kgs, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala said they would then go ahead with the second stage of her bariatric surgery. The procedure will involve bypassing the small intestine to reduce the absorption of food and doctors estimate it might take another year or two before that is possible. Currently, they are awaiting the results of her genetic test to determine the cause of her acute obesity.
