Congress party would stage a gherao agitations at Reserve Banka of India offices in Mumbai, Nagpur, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad on January 18 to protest against the demonetisation decision and the “loss of credibility” of the central bank.

“The interference of the government in the functioning of the RBI has increased too much due to a weak RBI Governor. Ordinary Indians are compelled to suffer,” said former union minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who addressed a press conference in Mumbai along with former chief minister and PCC president Ashok Chavan on Monday.

Earlier, a meeting was held at the party's headquarters “Tilak Bhavan” to decide the strategy for the protests. The meeting was attended by senior party leaders like Prithviraj Chavan, Narayan Rane and Balasaheb Thorat, and other office bearers of the frontal organisations.

Prithviraj Chavan, while talking to THE WEEK, said, “We will demand for the resignation of RBI Governor Urjit Patel. The autonomy of an institution like RBI is extremely important, and now its has become very clear that the very autonomy is at grave risk.”

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee will hold a state level convention in Mumbai on January 29 about the decision of demonetisation and its after effects. Congress party plans to make this a central issue during its campaign for the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat elections scheduled in February.
