With the ODI World Cup still two years away, India's men's selection committee have made a statement by looking into the future in terms of leadership. Despite a successful unbeaten Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, Rohit Sharma has been replaced as captain in the 50-over format.

The expected successor, Shubman Gill, has been named as India's new ODI captain at the selection committee meeting on Saturday (October 4). Gill, who took over as Test captain earlier in the year and surprisingly named as T20I vice-captain prior to the Asia Cup, was the predicted candidate to take over as captain amidst talks of Shreyas Iyer also being in the race. The latter has, however, been named as the vice-captain. Gill's impressive debut series as captain in England has earned him immense goodwill in the BCCI and that has resulted in his leadership elevation across formats.
Rohit, meanwhile, is still part of the squad as is Virat Kohli as the selectors plan to persist with the veterans but Rohit's exit as captain means that the management isn't sure of the 38-year-old's longevity with fitness also likely to be a concern at some point. Fitness is definitely not going to be Kohli's issue but form could be and whether his playing style will align with the philosophy of the new captain. Only time will give us the answers to these questions but for now, Rohit and Kohli are in the ODI side. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel are the new additions to the ODI squad for different reasons.
Rishabh Pant continues to be injured and that has given Jurel his chance at limited-overs cricket for India although KL Rahul remains India's first-choice wicket-keeper batter in ODIs. Pandya, who missed the Asia Cup final due to injury, is set to miss the entire Australia tour and it comes as a big opportunity for Reddy who is part of the ODI and T20I squads. Jasprit Bumrah, meanwhile, has been rested for the ODI series as the management looks to manage his workload with the World Cup around the corner.
