Olympic gold medallist Yohan Blake has urged people in India to “do what you can to stay safe” as the country grapples with the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Blake took to Twitter late on Tuesday to post a note saying that he was sending his love to India, a country he has grown to love. He further asked everyone to work together to overcome the crisis.

“Just want to take this time to send my love to India. I have been watching cricket over the years. I have grown to love the country so much. Wonderful people all around. I am begging everyone to please do what they can to stay safe. I know it may difficult but imagine if we work together (sic),” the 31-year-old wrote, tagging the official Twitter accounts of the Indian Premier League and the BCCI on the tweet.

The champion Jamaican sprinter, a big fan of cricket, had earlier expressed his desire to play in the IPL for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Blake is not the only sportsperson who has highlighted the present health crisis India is struggling with. Earlier this week, Australian pacer Pat Cummins, who is playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2021 IPL, donated $50,000 to the PM Cares Fund to help India procure oxygen cylinders and essential medicines.

Former bowling great Brett Lee has announced that will donate one Bitcoin (approx. INR 40 lakh) towards the cause.

India on Wednesday reported over 3 lakh new COVID-19 cases yet again, for the seventh consecutive day, with 3,293 deaths in the last 24 hours. Over 2.6 lakh recoveries have been reported as per the data issued by the health ministry.
