Barely months after a school in Kerala grabbed headlines after suspending two students for hugging in public, a college in the state has come out with a strange diktat.

According to media reports, Mount Zion Law College at Kadammanitta in Pathanamthitta district has asked girl students to not ride pillion with boys.

In a circular, dated January 11, 2018, put up on the notice board of the college, the authorities offered an explanation that borders on being bizarre. The colleges authorities claimed that the boys tend to go on high speed when girls are riding pillion and this would lead to accidents.

The college further asked the students to get permission from their parents if the girls wants to travel on bike with boys.

However, no restriction has been imposed on girls coming to college on their own bikes.

Defending the move, the principal of the college Paul Gomez told a news paper that the notice has been put up following an alert issued by the police over the safety of pillion riders. However, the police clarified that they have imposed no restrictions on girls riding pillion with boys.
