Karnataka rain update: A holiday has been declared for Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, and Bhatkal taluks of Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on Friday following torrential rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared an orange alert for Uttara Kannada while a red alert has been issued for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. According to the latest weather forecast, rainfall is also expected to lash some of the interior Karnataka districts.

Fishermen have been told not to venture into the sea in the light of the heavy rainfall along the coastal regions, Vijaya Karnataka said in a report. The IMD has said that widespread rains along the state's coast are expected until Wednesday, September 3.

According to the IMD, rains may cause temporary power disruptions, minor traffic snarls, and uprooting of weak tree branches. The public has been advised to stay indoors, close doors and windows, avoid unnecessary travel, unplug electrical appliances, seek safe shelter away from trees or waterbodies, and drive with caution.

The weather department said that the widespread rainfall along the Karnataka coast is due to the formation of a low-pressure area (LPA) on the Chhattisgarh coast. As a result, an orange alert has been issued for all coastal districts on August 30 and August 31 (Saturday and Sunday), and a yellow alert from September 1 to 3.

However, the interior regions of the southern state should also brace for more rains on Friday and Saturday, the IMD reportedly predicted. On August 29, an orange alert has been issued for Belagavi, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts and a yellow alert has been issued for Gadag, Vijayapura, Yadgir, and Hassan districts, the Vijaya Karnataka report said. A yellow alert has been issued for Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts on August 30, the report added.

Residents living downstream of the Tungabhadra Dam have been advised to remain vigilant. Officials said the current inflow into the Tungabhadra reservoir is around 36,000 cusecs (cubic foot per second) and is likely to rise due to inflows from the Tunga reservoir (32,000 cusecs released), Bhadra Dam (11,000 cusecs), Varada river (9,700 cusecs), and rainfall in the reservoir catchment area (53,000 cusecs). Water will be released into the river from noon today, with outflow expected to vary between 40,000 and 70,000 cusecs, depending on inflow.
