A migrant labourer named Mukesh from Uttar Pradesh was shot at by militants in Tumchi Nowpora, Pulwama, on Monday.
Mukesh was critically wounded and died shortly after the attack. Security forces cordoned off the area after the incident to search for the attackers.
This is the second targeted attack by militants since Sunday, when a police officer, Masroor Ali Wani, was critically wounded after being shot at by militants while playing cricket at Eidgah in Srinagar.
Wani sustained multiple injuries in the attack and was moved to the hospital for treatment. "#Terrorists fired upon and injured Inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. He was immediately transported to the hospital for treatment. Preliminary #investigation reveals that a pistol was used in this #terror crime," the police said in a post on X.
The area was cordoned off, and a case was registered, the police stated.
Shortly after the incident, a cordon and search operation was initiated in the area to apprehend the attackers.
Outgoing Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh said on Monday that the officer was playing cricket with colleagues when he was attacked. "He is being treated and is recovering," Singh told reporters at Zewan after launching 160 state-of-the-art vehicles for the 43 police stations under Operation Capacity Building (Op CAP).
He said that they cannot take anything lightly and must remain cautious as the threats persist.
When asked about his message for the police as he was retiring on October 31, he stated he was not leaving the force, as a policeman “always remains a policeman.” He will be succeeded by R.R. Swain, Special DG, CID.
