Congress leader Rashid Alvi’s apparent dig at the BJP leadership today, likening them to the demons in Ramayan, did not go down well with the saffron party.

In a programme in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, Alvi said, “Those who chant Ram Rajya and Jai Shri Ram are not muni (saint), but are the rakshas (demon) of the Ramayan Kal,” he said.

“Be cautious of those who lead you astray in the name of Ram.”

Referring to an incident from Ramayan, Alvi said that when Laxman was injured, the demons sent a monkey to stop Hanuman who was flying to get sanjeevani buti (medicinal herb). It intercepted Hanuman and asked him to sit with him and chant the name of Ram. After a while, however, Hanuman realised what the monkey was doing and killed him before proceeding.

“Some people are like that rakshas, chanting the name of Ram. Some people do not believe in dharma but talk about it. Some people say Ram Rajya has come, but in my understanding, there is no place for hate in Ram Rajya,” he said.

Reacting to Alvi’s remarks, BJP party state president Swatantra Dev Singh accused him of “shallow politics”.

“What kind of language are they using? It is very shallow. We are moving ahead on the basis of development.”

UP Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, too, came down heavily on Alvi. “The whole country knows how a person’s faith is if one believes in Ram. To do such politics on his name is not right. The whole country knows the power of Jai Shri Ram.”
