Why Subramanian Swamy wants India to offer refuge to ex-Afghan president Ghani

Swamy has pushed the Afghan 'government in exile' argument earlier also

Ashraf Ghani's stock as a leader in Afghanistan had been in free fall for months as the Taliban moved to consolidate power in the country. It probably hit rock-bottom after he fled the country as the Taliban took over Kabul on August 15. Allegations surfaced he had stolen millions of dollars in state funds.

But Ghani still, apparently, has a supporter in India: BJP MP Subramanian Swamy. Swamy had been outspoken about the Taliban threat to India. Earlier this week, he warned the Taliban could attack India in league with China and Pakistan in a year's time.

On Thursday, Swamy suggested that the government invite Ghani to live in India and form a government in exile. Swamy said this would help India when the Taliban "infiltrates" Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Swamy tweeted, "India should invite Fmr Afghanistan President Dr. Ghani to live in India. He is relatively highly educated (mostly in US) and can help India to form a future emigre Afghan government when Taliban infiltrates PoK with modern US army weapons."

Swamy has pushed the 'government in exile' argument earlier also. On August 14, he tweeted, "Taliban in Doha assured US a peaceful transition and a coalition Govt with President Ghani. Has it kept its word? India should therefore form the Afghan Government in Exile in New Delhi with President Ghani as head and declare imminent Taliban Govt in Kabul as illegal".

In a Facebook video on Wednesday, Ghani had denied allegations of stealing state funds. Ghani revealed he was in the UAE and blamed the peace process involving the US for the Taliban's return to power.
