Late gangster Iqbal Mirchi’s wife Hajra Memon and their two sons Junaid Memon and Asif Memon have been declared fugitive economic offenders by a Mumbai court on a plea of the Enforcement Directorate. The court has also directed to seize their properties in India and abroad after following due process of law.

The ED had moved the court in December to get the three family members declared as fugitive offenders under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018.

Mirchi was allegedly the right hand man of global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. The ED had filed a money laundering case against him and his family members after taking cognisance of the multiple FIRs lodged against him by the Mumbai Police. Mirchi died in 2013 in London and his family members based abroad were said to be evading ED summons. The ED alleged that there were multiple properties indirectly owned by him in and around Mumbai.

The three members of the Mirchi family join the list of businessmen Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi and four promoters of Gujarat-based Sterling Biotech company, who have been declared fugitive offenders in the past based on investigations by the ED.

Under the FEO Act, a person can be declared a fugitive economic offender if a warrant has been issued against him for an offence involving an amount of Rs 100 crore or more and if he has left the country.
