15 injured in stabbing spree, 'liquid' attack at rubber plant in Mishima, Japan

A stabbing incident at the Yokohama Rubber factory in Mishima, Japan, has left approximately 15 people injured. A 38-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene following the attack, which occurred at multiple locations within the factory grounds

About 15 people were injured in a stabbing spree at the Yokohama Rubber factory in Mishima city in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan, on Friday, according to the fire department.

According to the police, the man, who is believed to have stabbed the victims, has been detained and arrested on the spot for suspicion of murder, the Sankei Shinbun reported.

The suspect self-identified as Masaki Koyama, 38, and is believed to be a resident of the factory.

The incident occurred around 4:30 pm local time. A call was made to emergency number 119, reporting that “five of six people were stabbed by someone” at the rubber factory. A “spray-like liquid” was also used on the victims. The liquid is reportedly 'chlorine bleach, ' news site Aashi Newspaper reported.

Koyama was carrying a survival knife and wearing a gas mask during the stabbing.

The attacks were carried out at different parts of the factory grounds.

At least 6 of the victims were sent to the hospital.

The site is located about 1 kilometre away from Mishima Hall. An earlier report said that 14 people were injured.

The seriousness of the injuries inflicted is unknown; however, the victims are all conscious according to the NHK One.

The factory produces tyres for passenger cars and employs around 987 workers as of December 2024, according to its website. A representative of the rubber plant said, "There is nothing we can say about the matter."
