Dear Ambassador Viswanathan:

I am writing to you regarding your recent publication in The Week magazine titled “Amid political crisis, Peru faces pressure from other Latin American nations”. Your article provides a summary of the recent events leading to the withdrawal of the Peruvian Ambassador to the United Mexican States, with some personal comments and interpretation of these said events.

While I appreciate your continued interest in my country and the Latin American region as a whole, which is reflected in your publications, I must note that your recent article could mislead some readers in India, as some of the opinions that have been expressed in such a way as to cast doubt on the legitimate credentials of the Government of President Dina Boluarte, based on purely subjective grounds.

I take this chance to underscore that the recent actions undertaken by the Government of Peru reflect its strong rejection of the position taken by the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on domestic matters in Peru and his unacceptable and repeated challenges to the constitutional and democratic bases of the Government of President Dina Boluarte Zegarra.

I must highlight that, through his statements, the President of Mexico is in full breach of the international principle of non-intervention in internal matters of other States, as well as those related to the defence and promotion of democracy. He has gravely affected the relations of mutual respect, friendship, cooperation, and integration that historically have existed between Peru and Mexico.

I invite you, Ambassador Viswanathan, to take this into consideration for any upcoming publications on the current political and social situation in Peru.

Sincerely,

Javier Paulinich

Ambassador of Peru
