The Pakistan Democratic Movement, a coalition of opposition parties, had made rising inflation a key point of its agitation against the Imran Khan government.
On Friday, however, Pakistan's rampant inflation became a global talking point after the country's embassy in Serbia tweeted a music video on it.
The embassy's official Twitter handle wrote “With inflation breaking all previous records, how long do you expect @ImranKhanPTI that we goverment official will remain silent & keep working for you without been paid for past 3 months & our children been forced out of school due to non payment of fees Is this #NayaPakistan ?”
The handle apologised for the post, noting, "I am sorry @ImranKhanPTI, am not left with another option.”
The music video tweeted was a rap song by Saad Alavi. The video, titled Aap ne ghabrana nahi hai, had gone viral in March. It was inspired by a line from a speech by Imran in March 2020 about COVID-19. Imran had then said, "Aap ne ghabrana nahi hai (You should not panic). It is our belief that life and death are in the hands of Allah.”

In the song, Alavi talks about the rising prices of soap, flour, medicines and school fees.
Last month, Pakistan's National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) hiked the price of electricity by 1.68 Pakistani Rupees per unit. The hike followed the surge in prices of essential commodities such as petrol, diesel and sugar.
