Three people were rescued by the US Coast Guard on Wednesday from an uninhabited island in the Bahamas. The two men and one woman, who had been stranded for a month on the island are Cuban nationals.

They were spotted by a helicopter crew on Monday waving a large flag when the crew on the helicopter were on a routine air patrol around Anguilla Cay, a chain of islands between the Florida Keys and Cuba. The rescue, however, took place only on Wednesday due to weather restrictions.

They are currently at the US Immigrations and Enforcement custody. The crew on noticing the castaways dropped food, water and a radio. The trio had been surviving on rats and coconuts while they were stranded for 33 days.

The group told the Coast Guard that their boat had capsized in the rough Cuban seas about five weeks ago. No serious injuries have been reported. It is not clear, whether they are migrants trying to get to the US or merely lost at sea.
