Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, known for his candid expression of differences with the party, has voiced his support for his colleague Digvijay Singh over the latter's call for reform.
Singh had caused a stir by praising the organisational strength of the RSS-BJP, prompting many party leaders to move into damage control mode and insist that Congress has nothing to learn from the Sangh.
When asked whether he had spoken to Singh about the controversy, Tharoor responded, "We are friends, and having a conversation is natural. The organisation must be strengthened—there is no question about it."
The Thiruvananthapuram MP also highlighted the importance of discipline in maintaining a strong organisation. "We have a 140-year history; there's a lot we can learn. I also want the organisation to be strong. Discipline is essential. That's logical. There must be discipline within our organisation," he said.
On Saturday, Singh had shared an old photograph of Narendra Modi with BJP leader L.K. Advani on social media, commenting on how a grassroots worker rose to become both chief minister and prime minister by learning from their leadership.
However, distancing itself from Singh’s comments, Congress linked the RSS to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse, asserting that the party has nothing to learn from it.
"There's nothing to learn from the RSS. What can an organisation known for Godse teach an organisation founded by Gandhi?" Congress leader Pawar Khare asked.
Singh’s remarks came ahead of the CWC meeting, where the party decided on its agitational plan against the scrapping of MGNREGA, set to take effect from January 5.
A PTI report quoted sources saying Singh had raised the issue of strengthening the Congress organisation at the grassroots level, asserting that it was crucial in the fight against the ruling BJP and in efforts to oust it from power.
