Welcome to episode 30 of The Port Report from THE WEEK, with the latest updates from the world of ports for the week of September 5-11.
The Deendayal Port achieved an all-time high of 12.7 million metric tonnes in transshipments—by means of ship-to-ship operations—up to September 1 this year.
Next, the Paradip Port on September 6 berthed its first-ever Capesize vessel at Western Dock-1, marking a significant boost in its ability to handle larger vessels that need deeper drafts.

This was the bulk carrier Mineral Kwangyang, which had been carrying 1.52 lakh tonnes of coking coal from the Port of Hay Point in Australia—one of the largest coal export ports in the world.
This comes after the Paradip Port Authority’s overall plans to increase draft depth to 18.5m, which would allow the port to berth fully-laden Capesize vessels—allowing ships like the Mineral Kwangyang to bring in more of their cargo when they call at the port
Bidding for the port’s dry bulk berths, CQ-1 and CQ-2, also ended earlier this month, after which Adani Ports emerged as the highest bidder, and received the Letter of Award on September 9.
The new berths will add about 18 million metric tonnes of cargo handling capacity to the Paradip Port, and will be developed in a 30-year concession project under the Public-Private Partnership (or PPP) model.
Moving on, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port saw a container cargo throughput of 38.27 lakh TEUs from April to August in FY 2026-27, registering a 15.45 per cent year-on-year growth.
In August alone, the port handled 8.32 lakh TEUs of container cargo, while overall cargo throughput reached 9.74 million metric tonnes.
Next, in a major milestone for the V.O. Chidambaranar Port, the JSW Tuticorin Multipurpose Terminal Pvt. Ltd. successfully handled its 100th vessel during interim operations.
Also, at the ET Infra Global Ports & Shipping Awards 2026, the port was awarded Green Port of the Year and Smart Port & Digital Transformation Project of the Year.
Finally, the Cochin Port saw container traffic rise to 3.81 lakh TEUs from April to August in FY 2026-27, registering an 18.53 per cent year-on-year growth. In August alone, the port handled a record 97,952 TEUs of cargo as well.
