BCCI chief and former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday night reacted to news about an alleged post on Instagram by his daughter apparently referring to concerns about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The Instagram story by 18-year-old Sana Ganguly was apparently pulled down on Wednesday itself. The story contained an excerpt from The End of India, a book published in 2003 by noted writer Khushwant Singh. The excerpt referred to the approach of "every fascist regime" that depended on demonising other groups in order to thrive.

Sourav, who was appointed BCCI chief in late October, put up a terse tweet on Wednesday night, requesting that Sana be kept out of all these "issues". Sourav claimed the “post is not true”, adding his daughter is “too young a girl to know about anything in politics”.

Sourav tweeted, “Please keep Sana out of all this issues ... this post is not true ... she is too young a girl to know about anything in politics.”

Not surprisingly, Sourav's post about his daughter being “too young” was not appreciated by Twitter users. Former student activist and BJP critic Shehla Rashid tweeted that Sourav should be proud of his daughter for saying the "right thing". Rashid added, “'Young girls' has as much a right to be political as old people.”

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, who is the son of P. Chidambaram, tweeted it was “Disappointing to see @SGanguly99 repudiating his well read and thoughtful daughter.”

There had been speculation that the BJP has been courting Sourav Ganguly since the former Indian batsman met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the run-up to the BCCI elections in October. Ganguly had been non-committal about joining the BJP and has had cordial ties with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Critics of Banerjee say Sourav would provide a charismatic face for the BJP to match up against Banerjee in the run-up to the 2021 Assembly polls in West Bengal.
