Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq is in contention to become the national team's head coach after he applied for the job on Monday.

Following Pakistan's failure to ensure a place in the semifinals of the recently concluded World Cup in England, the country's cricket board decided not to renew the contract of coach Mickey Arthur.

Misbah, who retired from international in 2017, is Pakistan's most successful and longest-serving captain. He played as recently as five months ago for Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League T20 tournament. However, he has now presented himself as a contender for the post of the national coach.

“It has been interesting to see my name being mentioned as a future head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, but the fact is I only made the decision today,” Misbah said in a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“I am applying for the head coach's role fully aware that the competition will be tough as I envisage there will be a few more very competent and highly qualified people applying for one of the most challenging jobs in the game.”

“I have to admit it is everyone's dream to coach Pakistan cricket team, which has tremendous potential to be a force to be reckoned with across all formats,” Misbah said.
